Over wintering

Post  Blossom on Wed Apr 02, 2008 11:32 am

When overwintering plants in the hothouse, should one dig them up with soil intact and drop them into a pot, or replant them in potting mix? I've got a number of chillies that haven't fruited yet so thought I'd give them some shelter, except there won't be any heat, they will be out of the wind. Do you think they would survive without heating?

As long as they are fairly frost protected they should be fine. I would keep as much soil as possible on the roots and fill up the rest of the pot with good potting mix. Once they have given you the desired fruit, cut them back a little.

I have my plants on the balcony where it can get pretty cold in winter, but they are protected from the frost. I have had some of my plants several years now.

Good luck! Smile
