The Gods must be Crazy!

Post  Blossom on Tue Aug 19, 2008 5:00 am

No coca cola, just a crazy bunch of stars! This is a small play quilt, I'll quilt it in a random theme. I used bright colours to teach myself how to do what are known as "Stacked Stars". You take 6 (or whatever number you want) 12" pieces of fabric on top of each other, cut two cuts so there are 3 piles, then take the bottom two of one pile and put it to the top and one from the top of the 3rd pile and put it to the bottom. You then make another two cuts and put two from the bottom of the middle pile on top and one from the top of the first pile to the bottom, two more cuts and so, if anyone want to try it, I'll give more precise instructions. Then you piece each layer to create an offset star, with a different combo of colours. you can either just join them or put strips between as I've done, a couple of borders and its done in a day. Crazy patchwork is good when you don;t feel like being too accurate and it uses up scraps that are starting to annoy you.

Crazy indeed! Love it. Can just imagine the joy it'll bring to the kid(s) playing on it. Smile

It's an interesting and very clever technique and gives a great effect.
I have templates, cutter, board, quilting magazines and a material stash. Maybe one day I will pull the finger out and get into action!

It's a great way to while away a day. Mine get 'claimed' as soon as they are finished. I'll be whipping up a few small things to take on holiday with us. Probably Christmas tablemats and stuff I can do by hand.

I never seem to have any days to while away, BUT I spend to much time on the puter. Maybe I should just junp in the deep end. It always amazes me how quickly my friend can knock together an impressive quilt. I think once I start I will get the bug big time.

Cheers, Jan

I quilt when its raining and this winter has been a quilting winter - we've had 145ml so far this August. It is a satisfying hobby as well as practical. I just bought ( EBay) a lovely panel of Masai women that will be the centre of a couch quilt for my daughter who was born in Africa. I just spent today quilting the Crazy one - it's not big enough to warrant the expense of sending it to Pam, so I taught myself to quilt on the new sewing machine. It's a bit bodgy but is is my learning quilt, using a new technique and practise on the machine. I'll use it as a lap quilt. The Scarecrow is a bit bodgy too, I might have to redo his legs. So don't be intimidated by the complexity of some quilt, choose good fabrics - charm squares are a good way to start. A small cot size is good to begin with.

I'll take a couple to quilt by hand when I'm on holiday, plus a wall hanging, in case it rains and we get stuck inside. My next big project will take 8 months to do as I have subcribed to a Block of the Month pattern - it will be far more complex than anything I've ever done and I get the pattern and fabric every month for 8 months. The store I'm getting it from is in Cranbourne in Vic. Anywhere near you?
