Just finished 'The Inheritance of Loss' - Kiran Desai. Put it off - thought it would be sad for one thing and for another I have never been particularly drawn to India. But Desai was eloquent - gave me a much greater understanding of the migrant experience and even more interesting to me - how the colonial experience leaves lasting impressions of privilege and deference. Revelant to Australians I thought considering we still defer to a foreign head of state and are denied our own identity.
I will look forward to her next book - she understands the human condition and lays it bare but her prose is joyous – you are left with the feeling that life is worth living despite.
